these are time consuming jobs. I'll say from a whole day to a day and a half.
AnswerI'm just a backyard "mechanic", and have done a few heater cores in Taurus/Thunderbird/Sables - sedan type cars. Those take a long time due to the entire dashboard having to be moved - if not removed completely. The Windstar on the other hand, has the heater core at the bottom of the dashboard - I can't imagine it would take more than 1 hour to get the core out. Another hour to swap parts, reassemble, refill cooling system. I would expect a 2 hour job. (backyard mechanic's of course double or triple that ;)
Note: I did the temperature blend door repair and was more than 1/2 way to the core with that procedure, not much more than 15 minutes to get that far.
Leak in heater core. Replace core.
Once a heater core starts to leak, the only remedy is to replace it.Luckily it appears to be a pretty straight-forward job on the Windstar - the heater core is at the bottom of the center of the dashboard - remove the ductwork and some of the trim pieces to expose the heater core compartment.Of course, this is after draining the engine coolant and disconnecting the heater hoses in the engine compartment.See "Related Questions" below for more...
