Just replaced one in my 98, If you do yourself it will take about three hours just to remove it. So you can figure around 6hrs of labor plus parts.
This is not a simple repair, however it just takes time. You need to remove the cross member covering the radiator and then remove the radiator cooling fans. There is a retaining clip on the passenger side near the bottom that must be removed to free one of the transmission cooling lines (I believe). The instructions say you need to remove the AC compressor - however I was able to remove the alternator without doing this. It is a VERY tight fit but it is possible. Probably took about 4 hours to do the whole thing. The GM service guide was a help.

Suggest getting auto repair manual (Chilton's, etc). Best to remove transmission from the bottom with sub-frame off. Car needs to be jacked or put on stands. Transmission is very heavy, suggest getting transmission jack to help lower and install. Be in for about 6-8 hours to remove (if you are skilled) and 5-6 hours to install. Good luck.

See Chilton No 20384! You must calculate at least 7 h if you are experienced (and up to 40 hours, if not !!)! You have to remove the wheels, brake disk, brakes to remove the transaxles first, then you must remove all tubes from top to get access to the screws. The Transmission is to remove to the bottom.

The total time to drive from Aurora, Colorado to Irvine, California is about 15 hours, 2 minutes.
I just did this about a month ago. I found it best to take the radiator out of the car, it is much easier to access the bolts (4) of the alternator. You will need to get under the car and pull the lower shroud back to get to the bolt underneath. It took me approx. 3 hours.
