There is really no "check" when it comes to timing belts. The cost to get to the belt to look at it would be the same as if you were to go and replace it. Typical timing belt costs range from $200 - $500 depending on make and model. Most manufacturers recommend a timing belt replacement of at least every 60,000 miles so if you have met or exceeded this mileage, consider having the belt replaced along with the water pump as well, since the water pump is usually accessible when the timing belt is worked on.

I have heard that a timing belt should be replaced at 60,000 miles but I have also heard that if the belt was not replaced at 60,000 that it should be left alone, and I somewhat confirmed it on my Mazda 626, I was passed 60,000 and decided to do a "tune up" where the timing belt needed to be replaced................I'll tell you what it cause a whole bunch of problems that I did not have until I went to medeling with the car!!!!!!
