I am trying to figure this out actually. I just bought a 77 Impala, for $1000, it has some new hoses, belts, plugs and stuff like that, but the interior is fairly beat up, but it runs pretty good. Since it is a 1977, AND since the government did Cash for Clunkers, the truth is that there simply are not many cars like this on the road any more. I'd say 70% of the older models are now very rare, which should raise their value. If you want to really make good money though, start saving and when you have some money saved up get a rebuilt engine for it, nothing major, look for value, maybe $2000 or so. Then have it sand blasted so you can put rust inhibitor on it and get a new paint job, as well as replace the rubber door seals and the trim around the windows, new tires and some used rims that would look good, and make sure the lights all work and the interior is good. You can do all this for about $4000, or you could do most of the work yourself and save $2000 off that cost. The repainted, rebuilt 4-door version could sell for probably $6000, if you have a 2-door, especially a Super Sport, and do the same stuff, you could probably get $15k for it. (my guess.)
Fix a "door ajar" on Chevy Impala 2003 . Still on doors closed.
On the drivers door, inside edge of the door is a label, and that tells you. Also, take it to a weigh station for trucks, they will sometimes let you weigh your car.

The owners manual will tell you how to do it.
