The 305 was what old timers call a smogger. The Chevy 305 was never a performance engine. It was first built during a period when most of the auto manufacturers were struggling to engineer engines to overcome recently imposed emissions standards. Even an SS in the early 80's was no match for a basic V8 from the 60' or 70's. SS was nothing more than a label in the early 80's. You should look for a real performance engine if you are looking for power.
