You mst remove the pan and the valve body inside the tranmission. The range sensor is tied to the start circuit since the car must be in Neutral or Park to start, and is also responsable for turning on the reverse lights. If the dashboard is misreporting the actual gear, then that's a good indicator of it's failure. If however all the gears light up when you go into one gear, check the wires on the plug first. Battery acid does tend to drip on the plug causing connection and ground issues.
