You mst remove the pan and the valve body inside the tranmission. The range sensor is tied to the start circuit since the car must be in Neutral or Park to start, and is also responsable for turning on the reverse lights. If the dashboard is misreporting the actual gear, then that's a good indicator of it's failure. If however all the gears light up when you go into one gear, check the wires on the plug first. Battery acid does tend to drip on the plug causing connection and ground issues.

On a 2008 PT Cruiser, the transmission range sensor, also known as the neutral safety switch, is typically located on the side of the transmission, near the transmission linkage. It is usually mounted on the transmission case and connected to the gear shift mechanism. To access it, you may need to lift the vehicle and remove any necessary components for better visibility and reach.

it is located where the transmission is and is very easy to change. on a 2000 ford contour that is.
inside transaxle, have to drop pan and valve body, to change.
