Remove the wiper arms first...they pull right off the pivot shafts after you raise them up and pull the little tab underneath the base of the arm (though you may need to wriggle it a bit if it's stubborn). Depending on what model you have, there are about half a dozen screws (or push-in plastic fasteners) along the firewall, and possibly one or two on either end at the fender walls...scout it out beforehand so that you don't end up short any fasteners if it's got the plastic ones. After you get the screws removed, you can lift the front of it and lift it out away from the windshield. Tilt it up and pull it gently back away from the windshield, disconnect the washer hoses that're secured to the underside, and that's the thing removed.
If you're replacing or working on the cowl, remove the vacuum reservoir (wee black box toward the passenger's side) and keep it to replace on the new/repaired cowl. If you intend to replace the wiper motor or anything electrical, disconnect the battery before you get started. Those fuse blocks are expensive! ;)

first remove the wiper arms then take off the cowl grille (long hunk of tin) and all your linkage is right there A lot of elbow grease is required too, they just pop on and off, but they are really tight and there's not much room to get the leverage you need. A long screwdriver for prying can be helpful with popping the linkages off and on.
