Loosen bolt in tension pulley, then loosen tension bolt. Replace belt. Tighten tension bolt. Last, tighten bolt through pulley.
Look for a mounting bolt that needs to be loosen to allow the alternator, or another component that the belt powers, to pivot. They are sometimes hard to locate.
If it goes away, then it's probably the air compressor going bad and tying up. check the tension pulley and the serpentine belt.
You can obtain a serpentine belt diagram have most Chrysler/Jeep dealerships. The serpentine belt diagram can also be found at most auto-parts stores.
I'm going to go with the alternator here.
The water pump is powered by either a drive belt or serpentine belt. Follow the belt and you will locate the pump.
The power steering unit and the alternator are both driven by the serpentine belt. Loosen the tensioner pulley and the serpentine belt will become loose. Put the new serpentine belt on and tighten the tensioner pulley.
John's a dumbazz. 10mm socket for the tensioner and 15mm wrench to loosen the pulley on the top right side of engine by the electrical auxiliary fan. Loosen the puuley 1st then the tensioner to get enough play to slip off old one and do reverse for the new one. EZ $$$ remove airbox, loosen the power steering pump, draw a diagram of how the belt is on there, remove old one and install new one. tension it and tighten bolts, in all about a 10 minute job. john
Loosen the tensioner (It's the only pulley out of 7 that is not attached to a unit) by using a 15MM wrench, then loosen the tensioner screw on the upper left of the tensioner bracket (15MM as well), until you can remove the old belt, replace w/new belt and tighten screw then center tensioner bolt. Be careful of ADVANCE AUTO PARTS.....They like to give you the wrong belt. A good belt to use is the DRIVE RITE serpentine belt (Part No. 950K6), assuming you have a 4.0Ltr engine. Hope this helps!
This is located in the area just behind the serpentine belt and just to the left of the air cleaner housing.
My '96 Cherokee Sport does, so I bet a '98 does.
Release the fuel pressure . Remove the gas tank . On the top there is a lock ring, loosen it and install the new module assembly.
Disconnect the battery. Loosen and remove the serpentine belt. Unscrew the bolts that hold the alternator in place and remove it. Disconnect the wires that still hold the alternator to the vehicle. Connect the new alternator to the wires and screw it back in place. Replace the serpentine belt.
