This same thing happened to me and I had to remove the steering wheel collar and look for a small silver button near the ignition. Push the button and the key will come out. You will need to replace the solenoid to avoid having to do this every day for 3 years like me.
Yeah sure, its that thing you stick your key into to start it.
The ignition switch. Where the key goes in is the key tumbler.
The ignition key in a 1996 Buick Riviera may not switch back far enough to remove the key due to several potential issues. Common causes include a malfunctioning ignition cylinder, wear or damage in the ignition switch, or a problem with the steering column lock mechanism. Additionally, if the gear shift is not fully in the "Park" position, it can prevent the key from being released. Inspecting these components can help identify and resolve the issue.
i have a 06 Chevy cobalt and can't get the key out of the ignition switch
You do not need a key to replace the ignition switch.

Nope, this guy is wrong. The thing you stick your key in is the ignition cylinder or lock. The ignition switch is a separate unit. Both are available for replacement. The cylinder itself is just a mechanical unit which operates the electro-mechanical ignition switch located a bit further down the column.
how do I remove the key switch from a 1998 ford contour You have to remove the plastic trim around the steering column (behind the steering wheel). Put the key in the ignition cylinder and turn one click. There is a small hole on the side of the ignition cylinder, stick a small screwdriver into this hole and press hard. Pull out the ignition cylinder with the key.
