As long as the engine temperature doesn't move into the extremely hot range, then this is just normal operation for the engine's cooling system. When an engine is running at idle speed with the vehicle stopped, there is no air flow coming through the grill to assist in cooling the radiator. Only the engine's fan system is doing any of the cooling at idle speed. For this reason, the engine temperature will increase somewhat at idle in a non-moving vehicle. Once you start moving, even though the engine RPMs increase causing more heat, the air flow forced through the vehicle's front grill and through the radiator cooling fins compensates for the added heat and decreases the engine temperature. Note however, if the temperature is moving into the extreme hot area on the dash gage when the vehicle is idling and not moving, there may be issues with the engine's cooling system.

The temperature gauge in my 1997 Monte Carlo is fluctuating it will get to about 200 degrees when your stopped but when you take off it goes back down what is causing this?

This fluctuation is caused by common use. The temperature will be higher when the vehicle is idling because there is no air moving over the engine like it does when the car is in motion.

Idle high to low when not moving?

If your vehicle is idling high to low when its not moving, chances are you have an issue with the transmission. It may need to be replaced fully or simply fixed.

Why the mercury level can rise or fall in a thermometer?

The mercury level rises in a thermometer when the temperature increases because heat causes the mercury to expand, pushing it up the tube. Conversely, the mercury level falls when the temperature decreases because the cooler temperature causes the mercury to contract, moving it down the tube.

What causes a car to vibrate when idling and moving?

Car engines are demanding and require proper care to be taken. Failure to do so can result in problems with fuel, ignition, emissions, and other various systems. A vehicle is said to be idling when it has sufficient power to work the steering or other components but not enough to move the vehicle itself.

What causes the particles of a substance to lose thermal energy?

The particles in a substance lose thermal energy as the temperature decreases, because the particles are moving and vibrating less.
