ANSWER: There is a "raised" and empty fuse receptacle in the fuse box located in/under the dash. With the Key turned off, plug a spare fuse in this location. Turn key to "on" but don't start engine. "Check Engine" Light will flash Codes: For example "Flash-Pause-Flash-Flash-LONG PAUSE- (Repeat 3x)" is Code 12 (means the ECM thinks everything is normal) "Flash-Flash-Pause-Flash-Long Pause (Repeat 3x)" Would be code 21. Each Code will be flashed three times before the next one is given, Codes Will be shown in order from lowest number to highest number (Not order of importance), After all Codes are given the sequence will start over again. When done turn key off and remove fuse. To find out what the codes mean consult a service manual (eg "Haynes") or consult a mechanic.
