If this a split system, indoors and outdoors, and the outdoors unit appears to be running I suspect that you have a problem with the compressor. Maybe you have a leak and lost our refrigerant. Either of these can cause this symptom. Both require sophisticated repairs.

I have a 95 pathfinder and had the same problem with fuel pump fuses blowing. It turned out to be that the fuel sending unit had to be replaced. . Try cleaning the six contacts on top of the sender unit make sure they are isolated

On sables and tauruses there is a defect with the blower motor resister which causes a short in the electrical circut from the power distrabution box to the blower switch to the resister in the a/c housing(the smoke) start by repairing the wires to the resister and the resister your local ford dealer has these parts. then check along the circut for any other damage.
