The dimmer illumination wire is typically connected to the vehicle's dashboard lighting circuit. This allows the dimmer switch to adjust the brightness of the dashboard lights in conjunction with the vehicle's headlight settings. In many cases, it should be connected to the same wire that powers the other dashboard lights, often identified by a specific color code in the vehicle's wiring diagram. Always refer to the vehicle's manual or wiring schematic for accurate connections.
12v switched source. such as headlight switch or dimmer on the dash.
Tap into the dash illumination fuse in the fuse block.
No. There is no illumination, speed or retained accesory power in the factory radio. It is accomplished with car's CANbus communication. To hookup illumination wire on 2006 VW Jetta, tap into white/black wire at the light switch. It dims your lights on your radio. You can also set up different color for day and night.
Check fuses, check dash light dimmer switch. Do your parking lights come on when you turn them on with your head light switch. Check for power to all.If you've just installed an aftermarket stereo then this might be the solution for you: On most aftermarket stereos there's no wire connection for the Dimmer and/or Illumination (or there's a hook up for either the Illumination or Dimmer wire) and usually most people just tape them off and push them back. Well in the Chevrolet Malibu all of the Instrument Panel (to include the factory stereo) are wired together so that if one wire is disconnected it all goes out. So in order for you to get your Instrument Panel lights working again you must splice the two wires together. In laymans terms, you have to connect the Dimmer wire [Brown (not striped)] and the Illumination wire [Grey (not striped)] together. If your problem was the same as mine then this should do the trick

that wire is for the radio dimmer. when you turn on your headlights the radio dims so your not blinded at night. Some aftermarket stereos have a place to hook this wire up and some don't.
Replace your Head light switch. All of these circuits run through that switch.i just had this same problem but on my '97 Chevy Malibu... if you've just installed an aftermarket stereo then this might be the solution for you: On most aftermarket stereos there's no wire connection for the Dimmer and/or Illumination (or there's a hook up for either the Illumination or Dimmer wire) and usually most people just tape them off and push them back. The dash illumination light (dimmer) switch could be in the off position.
To install a dimmer switch with 3 wires, first turn off the power to the circuit. Connect the ground wire to the green screw on the dimmer switch. Connect the black wire to the wire labeled "hot" on the dimmer switch. Connect the red wire to the wire labeled "load" on the dimmer switch. Secure the wires with wire nuts and install the dimmer switch into the electrical box. Turn the power back on and test the dimmer switch.
On my 2000 Forester, the dashboard illumination dimmer control is on the turn signal stalk. --Ken
Its EASY! just connect the (usually green) wire to the negative post on the coil. Hook up the power wires and the illumination wire and ground for the tach wire and ur done its easy!
To properly wire a Leviton dimmer switch, first turn off the power to the circuit. Connect the black wire from the dimmer to the hot wire in the electrical box, the green wire to the ground wire, and the red and white wires to the remaining wires in the box. Secure the connections with wire nuts and install the dimmer switch into the electrical box. Turn the power back on and test the dimmer switch to ensure it is working correctly.
