You'd be lucky if you can hear it, unless something in the pump is severely loose and rattling around in there. Signs of a bad oil pump can be numerous however. Overheating, loss of power, grinding, oil in the intake, strong random vibration....

Use a stethoscope or a broom handle between the pump and your ear while the engine is running and you should be able to pinpoint a noisy fuel pump pretty easy, just keep your face away from the fan while the engine is running.

How do I know if fuel pump is bad 2003 Chevy impala?

To determine if the fuel pump in your 2003 Chevy Impala is bad, listen for a humming sound from the fuel tank when you turn the ignition key to the "on" position (without starting the engine). If you don't hear this sound, it may indicate a failing fuel pump. Additionally, if the engine cranks but doesn't start, or if you experience poor acceleration and stalling, these could also be signs of a faulty fuel pump. Testing fuel pressure with a gauge can provide definitive evidence of a malfunction.
