OHV is ( Over Head Valve ) that's a pushrod design engine ( my 1995
Ford Explorer has the 4.0 liter EFI , V6 engine which is the OHV
engine , the 8th " character " of the VIN is an "X"
SOHC is the Single Over Head Cam engine ( in the case of a Ford Explorer
with the 4.0 liter SOHC , V6 engine . There is ( 1 ) camshaft on the top of
each of the two cylinder heads ( VIN " E " , if it isn't a flex fuel engine )
Either the 2.3 L - SOHC - 4 cylinder , the 2.9 L - OHV - V6 , or the 4.0 L - OHV - V6
The 4.0 liter OHV has cast iron heads , the 4.0 liter SOHC has aluminum heads
Actually , depending on the model , both versions of the 4.0 L were still used in 1997 If you look at the 8th " character " of the VIN : " X " is the 4.0 L - OHV engine and " E " is the 4.0 L - SOHC engine
On the Eddie Bauer it should be the 4.0 L SOHC Check your VIN # - if the 8th "character" is an E it is the SOHC engine , if it is an X it would be the 4.0 L OHV engine.
It should, if you are talking about a 4.0 OHV and not the 4.0 SOHC. The 4.0 OHV is the really just a 2.9, with a larger bore.
The 8th " character " of the VIN " E " is the 4.0 liter SOHC and " X " is the 4.0 liter OHV engine Look from outside , at the base of the windshield on the drivers side , on top of the dash is your metal VIN plate or there is a sticker that will show the VIN on the end of the drivers door
That will depend on whether you have a 4.0 OHV engine, or a 4.0 SOHC, or a 5.0 engine. If you have a 4.0 OHV or a 5.0, the repair is not considered a real big deal. If you have a 4.0 SOHC, the engine may have to be removed. If you need specific repair information, please specify which engine you have.
Which engine do you have ? ( 4.0 L OHV / 4.0 L SOHC / 5.0 L V8 )
5 quarts WITH FILTER CHANGE for the 4.0 L - V6 ( OHV + SOHC versions )
You could have either the 4.0 liter SOHC - V6 engine or the 5.0 liter OHV - V8 engine
All the Ford V6s have the following firing order:1,4,2,5,3,6.These include 2.8L-SOHC, 3.0L-ohv, 3.0L-DOHC, 3.8L-ohv, 4.0L-SOHC..I trust it is the same for your engine. Good Luck and Remember.Change Your Mind, Not Your Oil.Use the First In Synthetic Motor Oil's.See My Bio For more information.
To determine if your 1997 Ford Explorer has an OHV (Overhead Valve) or SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) engine, check the engine specifications. The OHV engine is typically a 4.0L V6 with a pushrod design, while the SOHC version also has a 4.0L V6 but uses an overhead cam design. You can also look for a label or identification sticker under the hood that specifies the engine type, or refer to the owner's manual for detailed engine information. If you're still unsure, you can consult a mechanic or the dealership with your VIN for confirmation.
