I belive that the current response to this question was rediculous. There is no need for language in that manner. Many things happened like the asassination of JFK or Martin Luther's "I have a dream" speech. Also things like Woodstock did happen but it wasn;t about hippies smoking pot. Why Woodstock is famous is because of the fact that many of the times populaur artists played there and it was a time of peace. and not war.
I think the Cold War happened in this year.

One of the most outstanding events was the successful NASA project of landing men on the moon. It had been a USA goal since President John F. Kennedy announced the goal in the early 1960's.
Between 1961-1969, significant events in moon exploration included: the first human in space (Yuri Gagarin, 1961), the first American in space (Alan Shepard, 1961), President Kennedy's declaration of the goal to land humans on the Moon (1961), the first successful manned spaceflight orbiting the Earth (John Glenn, 1962), and the Apollo program's development and successful landing of humans on the Moon (1969).
There were only two landings between these years. They were Apollo 11and Apollo.
