Nothing bad should happen there. It might not operate at the exact original engineering specifications, but no change will most likely be noticed. In the ultra rare event that a check valve is in place, no heat will be produced.
The heater hoses connect the block, radiator, heater core, and waterpump. To replace, drain the radiator and catch the anti-freeze for recycling. Remove the hoses and put on new hoses. It is kind of nasty but not very difficult.
Radiator hoses and heater hoses should be inspected yearly and replaced when neccessary.

The heater core, in a Saturn and 1200, is held in place by four bolts and two water hoses. Remove the bolts and the water hoses. The heater core will come out. Reverse the process to install the new heater core.

try switching the 2 heater hoses around, they may be backwards
The heater core is located under the hood in the heater box where the blower motor is. Remove the heater hoses then the box can be unbolted and removed.
1- Drain coolant. 2- remove heater hoses from core inlet and outlet pipes in engine compartment. 3-remove screws and heater core cover. ( right side lower passenger compartment ) 4- carefully lower core out of heater unit. This old of a truck it would be wise to replace both heater hoses. Use antifreeze as a lubricant to install heater hoses to new core inlets.
