keeps you from putting car in gear unless brakes are pushed. I have been doing that wanting to put the truck in gear but it is not happening. It is still stuck in park.
Brake - Shift Interlock
Check the brake light fuse.
Check brake lights--if they do not work shift interlock will not release
the brake interlock press on the brake to release it
Should be the same as the stop light fuse
Might be a problem with the brake/transmission interlock switch
See the link below and click on Owner Guides. The Owner Guide ( which includes the brake-shift interlock instructions starting on page 210 ) can be viewed online.
No, the interlock shift solenoid and the interlock shift switch are not the same thing. The interlock shift solenoid is an electromechanical component that controls the locking mechanism for the gear shift, preventing the driver from shifting out of park without pressing the brake. In contrast, the interlock shift switch is a sensor that detects the position of the gear shift lever and sends signals to the vehicle's electronic systems. Both components work together but serve different functions in the vehicle's transmission system.
Check to see if your brake lights work. The brakes have to be pushed to get it out of park. If the brake lights don't work check the switch at the pedal. If the brake lights work the problem is with the shift interlock mechanism. There is a slot in the console with a plug in it. Take the plug out and insert a small screwdriver. This will allow you to shift out of park. To fix the shift interlock you must take the console off. The shift interlock is about $37 and easy to replace.
It is inside the shifter assembly.

Yes, a blown brake light fuse causes the shift interlock to malfunction. If the interlock can't tell if the brake is depressed or not, it won't shift out of park. The brake light fuse is a 15A in the engine bay fuse box.
