What is a gem module for 1999 Mercury Sable? And what does it control?
The GEM is $1200.00 plus labor. Better ideas by Ford
The best way to troubleshoot your GEM module on your Mercury is with a diagnostic tester. The diagnostic tester will tell you if the module is working properly.
behind the radio, to the left
It controls the variable power steering on your vehicle. The faster the car goes the less power steering the vehicle needs. The module is what controls that. It senses the cars speed and then determines how much power steering "power" needs to be applied.
What do you mean by "gem"?
The Gem Module is a relay that control the majority of the electrical functions in late model ford vehicles
To change the gem (Generic Electronic Module) on a 1999 Ford F-250, first disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety. Locate the GEM module, typically found under the dash or near the fuse box, and remove any screws or clips securing it in place. Disconnect the wiring harness from the old module, then install the new GEM by connecting the harness and securing it with screws or clips. Finally, reconnect the negative battery cable and test the vehicle's electrical systems.
No. The GEM is associated with things like power windows, indicator lights, and the alarm.
The GEM (Generic Electronic Module) on a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT is typically located behind the dashboard, specifically on the driver's side. It is mounted on the left side of the vehicle, near the steering column or just above the brake pedal area. To access it, you may need to remove the lower dash panel.
What is a Generic Electronic Module? The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is found on Ford vehicles and is basically a Body Control Computer. It controls many of the following functions on most Ford vehicles: * Warning chimes and warning lamps * One-touch down driver's side window * Daytime Running Lamps * Heated rear window * Windshield washers and wipers * Battery saver * Remote keyless entry * Illuminated entry with remote keyless entry * Interior lighting * Perimeter anti-theft * Four-wheel drive The GEM is bolted to the back of the fuse box.Sometimes though the fuse box gets water in it and causes the same problems too.
I am not sure what you mean by "black box." There was never any kind of tracking module, separate recording device, or anything like that from the factory on this car. I have heard that there are things that only engineers can access in the memory of the air bag module, is that what you mean? The air bag module is located under the center of the dash, but it's not like you can, or would want to remove it. Here is the list of all the modules in the module communication network on a 2002 Sable: Powertrain Control Module(PCM), Generic Electronic Module(GEM), Restraints Control Module or air bag module(RCM), Anti-lock Brakes Control Module(ABS), and Remote Climate Control Module(RCC). That is all the modules that communicate on both the Standard Corporate Protocol(SCP) and ISO9141 networks on that car. On the 2002 Sable, They weren't using a Contoller Area Network(CAN) yet, so there isn't another network, or modules. If someone installed some other device after the car was sold, then there is no telling where you would find that.
The GEM module is to the left of the steering column.
