It is called by the name , because of the rattling sound made by the engine . Today , the word is used to describe any type of old vehicle , that has a bad motor ( causing a rattling and kicking - like sound ) .
probably from a bad egr valve or no vaccume goimg 2 the valve. i had this same problem and the Mass Air Flow was replaced and the rattle/sizzle sound went away and engine power returned.
There will be a loud knocking and rattling. The engine will not go far before it is destroyed. If in doubt chat the system has adequate oil pressure.

Hi, I had the same problem and solved it. Untie the front wheel on the passenger side, you will find the rotor protection shield hanging and hitting against the wheels when the car running, and causing this rattling sound. Remove this shield or replace it, and the sound will disappear
could be the sound of the air being drawn in that's different ie carb'd systems with no airbox or if they are flat side carburettors, the rattling sound alone is enough to tell you its got flatsides or the engine is damaged.
No i dont however i am getting a rattling from somewhere else
