You may have a system that runs the pump(s) until the water temperature has dropped to some value in order to retrieve all the heat from the water before shutdown. That would mean, then, most likely the thermostat that controls this operation is probably defective. Although answer one is not wrong, there is another possibility. Usually a thermostats contacts are not "strong." or heavy enough to carry enough electric current to run the pump. So, a relay is placed in the circuit between the thermostat and the pump. Sometimes the relay can become defective and "freeze" in either the always ON position, or permanently OFF. Therefore, in addition to checking the operation of the thermostat[s], check for, and proper operation of, any relay in the pump circuit.j3h.

Is a circulating pump located on the supply or the return line in hot water heating systems'?

It can be in either location, depending on your head pressure ie a circ on the head or "pump away" will circulate water better in upper floors. If the system is in a 2 or 3 story house using standard baseboard, then having the circulator in either position wont matter. Most all manufacturers are shipping and or directing installers to pump away...circulator on the supply....

What are the benefits of using a hot water circulator in a residential heating system?

A hot water circulator in a residential heating system helps to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the house, reduces energy consumption by minimizing heat loss in pipes, and provides faster hot water delivery to faucets and showers.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using old thermostat?

The old mercury style thermostats provide a wide range from "on-off" and can provide major energy savings for hot water/steam radiator heating. These heat systems have wide swings of heating and the newer electronic thermostats cannot be adjusted for the wide swings. The largest manufactuer of thermostats in the US, Honeywell, acknowledges this but even Honeywell determined that not enough homes use the older heating systems to be practical to make an electronic unit for their application.
