One of the signs is the security light will stay on and the car won't turn over. For a while the light will eventually go out and then the car will start. But as the switch totally fails the car won't start anymore.

Do i need to change timing chain or belt of my 1999 Pontiac firebird 98700 miles...........what else should i look for like water pump etc?

The timing chain or belt on a 1999 Pontiac Firebird at 98,700 miles does not need to be changed unless it is showing signs of wear or breaks. There is an inspection plate that can be removed to check this. As far as changing other things at this mileage, consider changing the filter and fluid in the transmission. The engine oil should be changed every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

How can you determine if a light switch is bad?

To determine if a light switch is bad, you can first check if the light bulb is working by testing it in another fixture. If the bulb is fine, then try flipping the switch on and off to see if it feels loose or if there are any visible signs of damage. You can also use a multimeter to test the switch for continuity, which indicates if the electrical current can flow through it properly. If the switch fails any of these tests, it may be bad and need to be replaced.
