The firing order is unique to the engine. For example, 400 v8 1975 Pontiac has a firing order 18436572 as do all Pontiac v8s that year. The difference between the v8s is the rotation of the rotor in the distributor. The 400 is counter clockwise and other v8s that year were clockwise. Go to a public library and look at a Motor's repair manual and there is a page with drawings of all the motors and the firing orders of each.

All Pontiac v8's have distributors that go counterclockwise, Pontiac did this so that when you accelerate the distributor gear wouldn't be on the load side of the cam and it wouldn't affect the timing.
