The towing capacity of a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport varies depending on the engine and equipment but generally ranges from 2,000 to 5,000 pounds. Models with the 4.0-liter inline-six engine and the proper towing package can achieve the higher end of that range. It's important to check the owner's manual or a dealer for specifics based on the individual vehicle's configuration.

Check this out: Go to Edmunds.com and look up the vehicle specs of a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 liter I6 and it shows underneath specs that the towing capacity is 2000 lbs. I have a 98 I6 myself and it is a very nice towing vehicle as long as the rear end suspension is supported. You cannot find heavy rear coil springs for this vehicle only stock, those are not enough strength for the payload. I had a local company put an air bag system in the back and it drives wonderfully without dragging! -Sean
