Yes, a faulty speed sensor can cause the overdrive light to blink. The speed sensor provides information to the transmission control module about the vehicle's speed, and if it malfunctions, it can lead to erratic transmission behavior, including issues with overdrive engagement. When the transmission detects a problem, it may trigger the overdrive light to blink as a warning to the driver. It's important to diagnose and address the issue promptly to prevent further transmission damage.

I have a 1994 Ford Taurus SHO and ever couple of weeks this OVERDRIVE OFF lite flashes for a couple of days then goes off. I suspect it has something to do with the transmission and its electronic sensors. Take your car to a transmission shop and hook up an analyzer to the ECM for the transmission. It also can be related to the Vehicle Speed Sensor. This sensor feeds to the ECM and if defective will disable the electronic Overdrive. you.

When the Overdrive (OD) light blinks on a 1992 Toyota Paseo, it typically indicates a problem with the automatic transmission or its control system. This could be due to issues such as low transmission fluid, a malfunctioning sensor, or a more serious transmission problem. It's advisable to check the transmission fluid level and condition first, and if the light continues to blink, have the vehicle inspected by a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis. Ignoring this warning could lead to more significant transmission damage.
