It really depends on the year of your car, however, the thing that takes the most wear is the headlight switch itself, so that's where I would start. There is also a sensor that tells the headlamp circuitry to turn them on, but I'm not sure where it is located at.
check to see if you have an "Auto" setting, I have a 2003 and that works on mine.

Possibly turning on the headlights at dusk. the auto lamp is your daytime running headlights, their on all the time when you start your car and when you stop your car they go off automatically after a min. or two. you can turn this off buy simply turning the switch down i believe, wait until nighttime and then try it out.
