Cylinder 1 is on the cylinder closet to the front of the car on the driver's side. The order is 1,3,5 on the drivers side and 2,4,6 on the passenger side from front to rear.
It should be, if standing in front of the car, to the right of the master cyclinder. Driver's side against the firewall.

The thermostat for a 1999 Chevy Camaro V6 engine can be found under the hood. It is in the right side of the engine, under the throttle sensor.
If its a V8, it's the driver's side front. If its a V6 (like my 3.4 '95) it's the front RIGHT. Rule of thumb is, the cylinder head that is further forward has the #1 cyl.
