When its cold make sure the radiator is full of 50 50mistake a meat thermometer put in radiator when the temp of the water reaches the thermostat setting around 195 this is approximate I didn't look in the book. The upper radiator will get hot when it opens if the car starts to overheat and the stat did not open shut it down and replace the stat. If the stat is opening make sure the fan is coming on. If the fan doesn't come on jumper it off the battery if it spins replace the temp sending unit for the fan. If you have an inferred thermometer you can check the radiator for hot and cold spots it could be plugging up in spots and can be used instead of a meat thermometer
