What too look for if the heater in a 1992 Buick lesabre goes on and off when it chooses too?

On my mom's 1992 Buick lesabre the same sort of thing was happening, sometimes heat came on, sometimes a/c and would not shut off once came on, i wound up changing the unit that has the push buttons and fan speed control , it's a complete unit and usally can find one on ebay.
