Factory it would use R 12. It could be retrofitted to R 134a. According to Haynes Repair Manual for '87-'96 Dakotas, R 134a is not compatible with the R 12 system. Would be a good idea to check with Dodge dealer for retrofit parts. There's no requirement to purchase from them, just find out which parts and purchase where you please.
