I just bought an 04 Malibu from a dealer and noticed a ticking noise inside the dash that sounded like the blinker was on but it wasn't. I asked the dealer about it and he told me in these cars it's typical for the turn signal to continuously catch so it would make the noise even though the blinker wasn't actually turning on
The ticking noise could be worn out rocker arms under valve covers. Switch to heavier weight oil if ticking noise subsides that could be your problem. This is usually a sign of a high mileage engine. Worst case scenario would be weak oil pump not getting oil to top of heads.
depends on the car. may want to bring it to a car shop just in case (not likely to be a bomb)
The noise may be the drive Cain in the 4 wheel drive transfer case . It stretches with age and can hit againt the transfer case sides .Makes a rattling sound . Most noticed will stopped ib gear .
it will keep makeing the contious noise.
there could be excessive clearance in the rear differential case if this is a rear wheel drive vehicle.
When I opened mine to discover what was causing a ticking sound I discovered the output bearing to the front differential had lost/broken the plastic material that is supposed to support the "bearing balls" in a radial pattern. The replacement bearing surprise! had a metal cage. Prior to opening it up most opinions were the metal belt was slack, it was not.
bad transfer case
A bad gear can cause your four-wheel-drive transfer case to make a clunking sound. The transfer case should be checked immediately.
I can tell you mineis ticking because of a bad hydraulic valve lifter. Yes that's right but, mine had been ticking for about two weeks and I got to the point that I hated driving my truck. I used a bottle of Sea Foam available at any auto parts store. I pulled a vacuum hose on the top of the intake with engine running, and let it suck some into the intake cleaning any carbon deposits out. I then dumped the rest into the crank case where the oil goes make sure to not overfill it though. I've gone two months with no ticking!
I had a 2000 Explorer with a grinding noise coming from the front . It my case, it was the axle bearing assembly on both sides. They are around 200 per side to purchase.
if that ticking noise increases with rpm that may be lifter noise. it happens when the lifters are not getting they lubrication it need. it may be due to "dirty"/contaminated oil and or in some engines it would indicate time to adjust them.(if they're mechanical) My Opinion This noise is sometimes also cause by your oil type. since your vehicle is over 10yrs old there is some wear in the engine. if you are still using 10/30 oil it may not be enough to provide the cushioning your lifters need to prevent metal to metal contact. what i do is i change my oil to a thicker type.(20/50) this provides additional cushioning. In a '''NEW''' vehicle this may not be recomended. In your case we are speaking of 10yrs of service and wear in the engine WILL occur. your manufacturer specified oil applies to new vehicles since obviously there is no wear in the engine they don't need the extra protection/"cushioning".
Depends on which part of the truck the noise is coming from. Could be an u-joint, a wheel bearing, a failed transfer case......
