A lot of things could be causing that. First did you check your coolant?
It can be one of these 3 things...1 Throttle position sensor..2 Mass airflow senser...3 Map senser
Check for low coolant level.

Instead of having a 2.8 v6 or non h.o 305. It would have a 350 tpi or high output 305. It would have a different spoiler , suspension , and have formula stickers on the doors.
If they are both Chevy V8 cars it will bolt up.
What parts??? Body, engine, suspension???
The 1989 Firebird typically has a fuel tank capacity of around 15.5 gallons.
The cool water hitting your piping hot exhaust makes the metal contract (Shrink) and it makes a ticking noise.

A likely cause is an internally restricted radiator.
If its a V8, its going to be .035
Water pump, Radiator, thermostat, low coolant, blown head gasket, busted hose. Could be one or all but I would check these first.
