Explorer 1 was built in 1957 and launched on January 31, 1958. It was the first satellite sent into orbit by the United States, developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in response to the Soviet Union's Sputnik program. The satellite played a crucial role in the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts.
