The 5R55E transmission can be identified by its distinct features, including its aluminum case, a rectangular shape, and an overall length of about 24 inches. It typically has a five-speed configuration and is commonly found in Ford vehicles like the Ford Explorer and Ranger from the late 1990s to early 2000s. Additionally, the transmission model number can often be found on a tag attached to the case, providing a clear identification.
