You can either pull the engine out or remove the transmission and flywheel to install the rear seal. It slides over the back of the CRANKSHAFT on the back of the engine.

Must remove 1 or the other to replace seal.

Does a 350 with casting no 3970010 have a one piece rear main?

Yes, a 350 engine with casting number 3970010 typically features a one-piece rear main seal. This casting number corresponds to a later model small-block Chevy engine produced from 1986 to 1995, during which time the transition to a one-piece rear main seal design was implemented. If you're working on this engine, you can expect it to have the one-piece seal configuration.

How does an rear crankshaft oil seal operate?

The job of the rear main seal is to keep the oil lubricating the rear main bearing from leaking out. Older model rear main seals were made from a "rope" type of material. Today the rear main seal is a one or two piece seal made from neoprene rubber and is located directly behind the rearmost main bearing journal of the crankshaft.
