The back of the speedometer and the tailshaft of the transmission.
To replace the rattling speedometer cable on a 1986 Caprice Classic, first, disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety. Then, locate the speedometer cable at the back of the speedometer gauge and the transmission; unscrew the cable from both ends. Remove the old cable and install the new one by securing it to the transmission and reconnecting it to the speedometer. Finally, check for proper function and reattach the battery terminal.
There is no speedometer cable anymore, it's all electronic.
Cable is mechanical.
Probably cable
Here is how the Chilton Manual says to do it......1.Raise and safely support the vehicle.2.Disengage the cable from the transmission.->Disconnect the cable by pulling it out of the speed sensor. Do not attempt to remove the spring retainer clip with the sensor. 3.Disconnect the cable from its retaining clips4.Push the cable through the grommet in the floor and pull it into the passenger compartment.5.Disconnect the cable from the speedometer, cluster removal may be necessary.6.Install the speedometer in position and route it through the floor.7.Connect it at the speedometer and at the transmission.Hope this helps.

how do you install a aftermarket radio in 1986 caprice
The speedometer cable on a 1986 Chevy Celebrity is between the speedometer and the transaxle. To remove the cable from the speedometer according to the factory service manual: 1. Remove the trim panel below the steering column. Take note of what you take off, you will need to replace it. 2. The cable is held to the speedometer with a quick disconnect. Reach up under the dash and push the release to disconnect the cable. The release is near the top of the cable. I would put a wire or string around the cable to guide the new cable in place. To remove the cable under the hood: 1. Pull the speedometer cable out thru the firewall. If you put a wire or string on it to guide the new cable in, take it off the old cable. 2. Take careful note of the routing of the old cable, follow the cable down to the transaxle and unscrew the fitting at the transaxle and take the cable out. You should now be ready to install a new cable. Put the cable in place in the transaxle and tighten the nut. Route the cable as the original was, then if you put a wire or string in place attach it to the new cable and start it in the hole thru the firewall. Inside the car: If you used the wire or string pull on it to draw the cable inside the car, guide the cable into place on the speedometer housing and engage the latch. Remove the wire if you used it. Put the trim panel under the steering column back in place.
To replace the speedometer cable on a 1986 Chevy Celebrity: According to my factory service manual: 1. Remove the trim panel underneath the steering column. 2. The cable is held in place by a quick release button. Reach up by the steering column and push the quick release button and pull the cable off. I like to attach a wire or string to the cable so that I have something to pull the new cable in with. Then under the hood: 1. Pull the speedometer cable out of the dash, if you used a wire untie it. 2. Follow the cable to the other end at the transaxle. Unscrew the nut that holds the cable to the transaxle, pull the cable out. Reverse these steps to install the new cable. Be careful to follow the route of the original cable.
