On a 1998 Ford Ranger :
Assuming you have either the 3.0 or the 4.0 liter V6 engine :
Bank 1 is the passenger side of the engine
Sensor 1 ( upstream sensor ) would be close to the engine before the
exhaust enters the catalytic converter ( it might even be in the outlet of the
exhaust manifold )
"bank one" is misleading on a four cylinder engine, since there is only one bank to begin with. Bank 1, sensor 1 is the upstream O2 sensor screwed into the exaust system before the catalytic converter. Bank 1 sensor 2 is screwd into the exaust system downstream of the catalytic converter.
There are 2 sensors 1 upstream and 1 downstream to tell which one is bad use a scan tool if the code says bank 1 sensor 1 it's the upstream if it's bank 1 sensor 2 it's the downstream
Bank 2 is the drivers side of your 4.2 liter V6 in a 1998 Ford F-150 Sensor 1 is between the engine and the catalytic converter ( upstream )
Bank 2 is the drivers side of the engine on your Ford Explorer Sensor 1 is either in the exhaust manifold or the exhaust pipe before the catalytic converter ( upstream )
it is the rear sensor bank 1 (the one after the converter)
The upstream O2 sensor is mounted in the ehxaust manifold The downstream O2 sensor is mounted in the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter
It is right on top of the Catalytic Converter.
On the 98 u have two oxygen sensors an upstream and a downstream. The upstream oxygen sensor is located closer to the front of the truck by the transmission. The downstream oxygen sensor is located on down torwards the back of the truck along the side of the frame.
bank one is close to the fire wall sensor one is before the cat
its located on the back axle on the axle housing
in the exhaust manifold right before the flex pipe. in the 3.0 it is located behind the engine.
Oxygen SensorSome vehicles have (2) and some have (4) O2 sensors. When you start looking at the O2 sensors, they are normally numbered something like "Bank 1 Sensor 1" Bank 1 is on the passenger side; Bank 2 is on the driver's side. Sensor 1 is the upstream sensor (near the frame, between the block and the cat) and Sensor 2 is near the Y-pipe (downstream of the cat).Normally it is the upstream sensors (sensor 1) that go first. They see the harshest conditions. You will need;Oxygen Sensor SocketAnti-SeizedPenetrating OilI have even used a small plumbers propane tank and heat it up and it help get them free.Sometimes it will take 15 minutes or take a few hours it depends on your luck...
