TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems) works in one of 2 ways; Direct and Indirect

Your car most likely has the Indirect sensor, meaning there is no sensor attached to the valve stem, and the car's brain triggers the light when one wheel spins faster than it's counterpart across the axle.

Since 2007 all new vehicles had to come equipped with Direct TPMS, which has a physical sensor attached to the valve stem that transmits data to the car.
