Passengers side of engine block, down low, best reached from underneath.
I believe the Coil Pack grounds itself when mounted. One wire is constant voltage, the other fires the plug.
If you have a 2.2L engine in that 98 S10, the coil pack would be attached the the lower portion of the pasenger side of the engine block. It is best reached from underneath.
It has a coil pack but no distributor.

under the coil pack rr of engine block
On the engine block, lower passenger side. Just follow the spark plug wires.
On the throttle body.
If it is the 2.2 engine, on the lower passenger side of the engine block. It is best reached from underneath.
See underhood sticker.
Remove the fuel tank or remove the bed, your choice.
When looking at the engine, the coil will be on the passenger side of the engine. Look at the air intake tube box, follow it up to the throttle body. Next to the throttle body on will be the coil. Its a single coil, not coil over plug design. Erik
I don't think the timing is adjustable. I drive a '98 s10 with the 2.2l, and mine has a distributorless system GM started using; it uses ignition coils, and the timing is automatically adjusted by the computer.
