99 Mercury Cougar 2.5L V6 Manual Transmission
The VSS is located on the transmission. From under the vehicle find the lower O2 sensor toward the rear of the vehicle--look up, it is a black box looking thing on top of the transmission housing (kind of hard to see). Mine did not have a bolt it unscrewed. Also, Mine had a pin with a lock. Take a screw driver and pick up on the lock toward the rear of the vehicle and pull the pin out toward the front of the vehicle. Now, Lift up on the shaft that the VSS was attached to and pull out the aluminum housing and gear. My VSS shaft broke (plastic) and it fused with the gear (plastic). Still do not know the cause but if it happens again I will pull the transmission. Found a new gear at Tacoma Speedometer $9 and a VSS at Oreilly's $24.
