On the side, about half way up. I believe a 3/8 rachet fits in it to unscrew.
The manual transmission does not have a dipstick , there will be a fill plug somewhere on the transmission body
To check the manual transmission fluid in a 1999 Ford Contour, first ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the engine is off. Locate the transmission fill plug on the side of the transmission case. Remove the fill plug using the appropriate tool, and check the fluid level; it should be just below the fill hole. If necessary, add the appropriate type of transmission fluid until it reaches the correct level.
If you take the fill plug out of the side of the trans you just fill it up till it comes out of that hole.
Automatic, you fill down the dipstick tube. Manual, there is a plug that screws out of the side. That is the wrong answer for a manual. The plug on the side is the drain. WHERE IS THE FILL
Drivers side, about midway up and in the middle of the trans you will find a plug for filling.
There are none. There is a fill port on the side of the transaxle case. Use oil meeting Ford specification number ESD-M2C186-A.
Usually you just fill it from where you pull out the tranny dipstick from. Just get a funnel with a little hose attched at the bottom and start pouring in. Where is the transmission filter on contour 99
According to the 1998 Ford F-150 owners manual : Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used in the 5 speed manual transmission ( 3.5 litres / 3.75 U.S. quarts , fill to 3/8 inch below bottom of filler hole )

fill until fluid starts to pour out of the fill hole. Should be around 2.25 bottles.

There is no dipstick for the manual transmission , the fluid level is checked at the fill plug on the transmission ( underneath the Explorer )
