As far as I know the car's computer signals the radio to produce the chime. I noticed that when i installed an aftermarket stereo, the chimes all disappeared. This isn't a huge problem, you just have to make sure that you don't forget to turn off your lights.
If you want to get rid of it, you could install an aftermarket stereo. not the best solution, i know.
