During the "purge" cycle, engine vacuum draws the fumes from the canister into the intake manifold. The purge and vent valves are also cycled to run diagnostic tests on the fuel tank and evaporative system integrity. Therefore "incorrect purge flow" could be caused by a malfunctioning purge or vent valve, damaged or kinked tubing, or even a loose gas cap. Always make your gas cap click when you tighten it.
