The headlamp module on the 87 Firebird (all sub-models are the same) is on the firewall, just to one side of the power brake booster.
It is not quite flat, about 4" by 4", with two electrical connectors, one with 4 wires and one with 5.
This is a (sort-of) sealed unit that could be repaired by an electronic tech. I mention this because it may be hard to find one unless you can get a used one somewhere.

Timing on a 1987 thru 1990 Chevy Celebrity 2.8/3.1 engine is controlled by the ignition control module along with the engine control module. There is no provision or specification for manually adjusting the timing on these distributor-less models.
Sounds like your oxygen sensor is bad
Quit running after its fully up to temp? Restarts after it cools down? Check the spark when it does it, could be the ignition control module.
