The 4F20E transaxle is totally controlled by the PCM and has no modulator valve. Quote from Haynes Repair Manual. "If the transaxle requires major repair work, it should be left to a dealer service department or a transmission repair shop. You can, however, remove and install the transaxle yourself and save the expense, even if the repair work is done by a transmission shop(but be sure a proper diagnosis has been made before removing the transaxle). on my 1999 ford mercury villager its on top of transmission under the van
On a Mercury Villager ( being a front wheel drive vehicle ) The transaxle ( transmission ) is located in the engine compartment to the drivers side of the engine
chances are it's the modulator valve that's bad. the modulator valve helps build up pressure in the transmission to shift gears. it's usually located on the side of the transmission. it's silver and round like a fuel pressure regulator. very cheap to fix!
The transmission is controled by the computer. If it will not shift, there is a problem. There is no (vacuum) modulator. Take the car to a dealer or a good transmission shop. Be prepared to have it rebuilt or replaced.
It might be the transmission range selector
Replace the transmission computer. Located under the center console.
In the transmission in front of the modulator
The transmission does not have a vacuum modulator. The transmission does not have a vacuum modulator.
where is the PCM located on Mercury Villager 97
The Vehicle Speed Sensor on the 1996 Mercury Villager is located on the back of the transmission (as you look at the vehicle from the front) on top of the transmission with a pair of wires leading away from it... best to reach it from under the vehicle.
In the 1997 Mercury Villager, the Transmission fluid dipstick is located on the driver's side of the engine just in front of and below the master cylinder/brake fluid check. The 97 Villager has a bulbous knob on top with no indication that it is the Transmission fluid.
The transmission fluid dipstick is just to the left of and below the battery and fuse box.
