Generaly back-fires through the carb are caused by cylinder compression leaking past a intake valve when it should be closed ,There can be many things that can cause this ,ignition timing is off, burnt valve, broken rocker arm or rocker arm out of adjustment ,bent push rod, broken valve spring and sometimes lobes worn off the cam-shaft ,I would check the timing first and then visualy check the valve train,do a compression check to try to find the cylinder that is causing the back-fire.
