if its only happening at slow speeds like pulling into or out of a parking space its the transfer case i just got mine replaced. called junk yard got transfer case call dealership and get gasket and seal and you are good to go.
On a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer : Put your low beam head lights on and pull the headlight selector switch towards you
get some tools and turn some wrenches it is very easy to replace it. you can easily access it on top left of engine.

your abs lite wont turn because its a warning lite.it comes on when something is not working the way it should.its a reminder for you to take it in to be repaired

When facing the front of the Mercury Mountaineer, the drain plug is on the lower left of the radiator. Place a bucket under the drain plug spigot before loosening to catch the coolant. To empty the radiator, turn the drain plug three-quarters of a turn. Tighten the drain plug before re-filling with coolant.
Turn your low beam headlights on and pull the headlight knob out towards you to turn on your fog lights ( push the knob back in away from you to turn the fog lights off )
