backfiring is a sympton of a lean condition. look for vacuum leaks and fuel delivery problems.

Contact the manufacturer. A general "break in " guideline: Don't over-rev it (high rpm), don't lug it (high power, low rpm) and change the break in oil at about 500 miles.
