Had similar problem several years ago. There is a sensor in the transmission that, when it fails, will not allow the transmission to shift to a higher gear. When it happened to me, I could not manually shift it to a higher gear. I took to repair shop to be fixed. Not sure if it is a diy project.

there is no neutral safety switch on 79 accords. I had 2 of them and I would start it in 1st gear alot when the clutch was stuck engaged. Dave

it is stuck in 1st and the shifter is broken SOMEWHERE it might even be inside the trans. their are shifting forks inside the trans.
