I am having a similar problem on my 1991 Park Aenue, where at times I cannot shift out of park either into reverse, neutral, or reverse. I took it in to the dealer and they determined that it was the solenoid which they are now tring to replace (from another state). Could that be your own prolbem too, even though it is a different model.
Its held on by an internal retainer clip. I had to cut the old one off, and a new one slipped right on
The Camry in 1990 doesnt have a shift solenoid. It was controled by a hydraulic shift governor inside the transmission. So the trans. has to come out and be opened up.
It is a 4 speed automatic. Therefore it will shift 3 times. It will shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th.
it sounds like your neutral safety switch
Should be a removable panel under steering column. where adjusting screw is located Place gear shift in neutral to adjust
A 1990 Buick Reatta not shifting into third gear could be due to several issues, including low transmission fluid levels, a faulty shift solenoid, or a malfunctioning governor. Additionally, problems with the transmission control module or internal transmission damage could also prevent proper shifting. It's advisable to check fluid levels and connections first, and if those are fine, a professional diagnostic may be necessary to identify and resolve the issue.
It is located on top of the transmission where the shift cable attaches to the transmission.
Check the fluid level first, it may be low or empty.
Sport. It changes the shift pattern of the automatic transmission. You can turn this on or off.

I had the same problem. I found that my 2nd and 4th gears were worn to the point of non existance.
